Abstract

Objective: verify the therapeutic innovations in the management of irritable bowel syndrome. Methods: To adequately address the subject in question and answer the research question, it was decided to carry out an integrative literature review, with a qualitative character. The research strategy will be carried out through a literature search in the Medical Publisher (PUBMED) and Science Direct databases in order to identify studies related to irritable bowel syndrome, its therapeutic management and clinical manifestations. After the construction of the steps, the final sample had 15 publications. Results: Four areas of intervention were identified for this condition, being the psychosocial one, through psychological therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, hypnotherapy, relaxation therapy, multi-component psychological therapy and dynamic psychotherapy; the pharmacological one, with modulation of the intestinal microbiota with the drugs alosetron, eluxadoline and rifaximin; the surgical one, with transplantation of the fecal microbiota and changes in the patients' lifestyle, with good nutrition, physical activity, and a FODMAPS-free diet. Conclusion: The treatment of IBS is mainly done through changes in life habits, such as dietary reeducation with dietary adjustments, avoiding foods that produce gas and diarrhea, increasing fiber intake and fluid consumption, understanding the patients regarding their condition, the practice of regular physical exercises that together aim at an improvement in intestinal transit, symptoms, such as abdominal pain and excess gas and strengthening of the sympathetic tone. Cognitive behavioral therapy and hypnotherapy have been shown to reduce irritable bowel symptoms. Physical and behavioral therapies can help with pelvic floor dysfunction, which is underdiagnosed in patients with IBS.
