Abstract

Cardiogenic pulmonary edema is caused by elevated pulmonary capillary hydrostatic pressure leading to transudation of fluid into the pulmonary interstitium and alveoli. For the management of acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema there is a standard treatment that includes the use of diuretics, nitroglycerin, oxygen and opioids (morphine). In recent years, the pros and cons of using morphine in acute pulmonary edema have been discussed, since the use of this drug can cause a serious adverse effect, which is respiratory depression, increasing mortality. The research method involved the descriptors “pulmonary edema”, morphine and mortality, which were searched in the Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Pubmed databases, finding a total of 68 articles. After the exclusion and inclusion criteria, 10 articles were chosen. In light of the reviewed articles, it was concluded that there is no literature proving the safety of morphine in acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema.
